Originally found in China and Japan, this Allium is a frost tolerant perennial plant, easy to grow also in pot.
The plant looks very similar to an onion plant, however it is distinguished by the smaller and elongated bulbs, the shorter floral stems and the leaves that develop in tufts from the bulb.
In the Far East, leaves and bulbs of the Welsh onion represent the onion substitute par excellence and are used to flavor dishes based on pasta, rice, meat, soups.
The leaves can be used fresh and possibly stored in the freezer.
*At the same time as the autumn/winter period, the plant has little or no vegetation.
