Native to the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern areas, Glycyrrhiza glabra is a cold-resistant perennial herbaceous plant. The name licorice refers to the plant extract obtained by boiling its underground stem.

Widely known in the Asian continent already 5000 years ago, the plant was used for curative purposes against cough and liver problems.

Today the properties recognized for this species are multiple, such as digestive, detoxifying, diuretic and purifying, and the root is in fact used in many herbal preparations and marketed pure, in the form of sticks, powder or juice.

The plant can reach one meter in height.

*At the same time as the autumn/winter period, the plant may appear sparse or devoid of vegetation.
