It is a herbaceous species capable of reaching approximately 60 cm in height, currently considered poisonous.
In the past the parts that were used were leaves and seeds for its sedative and narcotic properties. In the Middle Ages it had the reputation of being a magical herb and was also used to promote rain.
Mentioned in films and novels, inHamlet by Shakespeare the king, Hamlet's father, is killed by poisoning from henbane poured into his ear while he slept.
