Vitex agnus-castus is a perennial and deciduous tree, belonging to the Verbenaceae family.

This species can reach a height of 5-6 meters. Its leaves are aromatic and lanceolate. Attracting spikes of lavender flowers appear during summer, being very interesting for bees and other pollinators. Flowers are quite attractive to butterflies.

Monk's pepper berries are used as spice. They have a strong peppery flavour, a possible substitute for black pepper.
